Earlier this week I was able to attend a press preview of The Furious, a new martial arts film from director Kenji Tanigaki. Here\u2019s a brief synopsis:<\/p>\n

After the daughter of Wang Wei (Xie Miao) is kidnapped by a criminal network and he receives no help from the corrupt police, Wei sets out on a rampage to find her himself. His only ally is Navin (Joe Taslim) \u2013 a relentless journalist whose wife has mysteriously disappeared. Fueled by a furious vengeance, the unlikely duo ruthlessly fights against the kidnappers in this explosive martial arts showdown.<\/em><\/p>\n

One of my most anticipated movies of the summer, The Furious is a nonstop action epic that goes out of its way to give you your money\u2019s worth of fighting. Fight Choreographer Kensuke Sonomura and director Tanigaki create an experience that you will not forget. Nearly every fight scene felt like they could be the climax of an action movie, feeling huge in scope using the space of the sets and props to keep things moving and flowing in a way that was beautiful to watch. Watching this film you are very aware that you are watching masters at work with Xie Miao really coming to life as the unstoppable force he\u2019s embodying.<\/p>\n

Joe Taslim plays our supporting character that teams up with Miao to save the day, Taslim was great in this. I think he has the potential to top-line his own series of action films in the US. I\u2019d rather watch him fight gangsters and traffickers than Liam Neeson any day. His martial arts ability combined with his screen presence really makes you wonder why he\u2019s not in more movies over here, truly an amazing talent that really helps elevate this film. It was also nice seeing Taslim on screen with Yayan Ruhian, their reunion was very fun in a stand-off that you have to see to believe.<\/p>\n

I was very surprised by the film\u2019s length with the story continuing after you think it was over. This is my only issue with The Furious because as much as I love seeing the carefully choreographed, almost balletic fight scenes a couple felt as if they went on a bit too long. Especially the final fight, it kept finding ways to continue making me feel a bit fatigued by the end of it even if it was thrilling to watch. Complaining about too much action in an action movie obviously sounds like I\u2019m one of those \u201csteak is too juicy, shrimp too buttery\u201d guys, it just could have been a bit tighter. It could also be that I found the movie a bit overstimulating thanks to the sheer amount of fight scenes that keep the narrative moving.<\/p>\n

The story here feels very much like a Jason Statham plot except with action that felt executed in a way that was fresh, exciting, and while not exactly believable (the amount of death blows that both our heroes & villains survive is astonishing) it was credible that our actors were capable of performing these unrelenting feats of brutality. I think the movie fell a bit short of my expectations due to the hype building this up to be to the level of The Raid, which it is not. However, this is still a very fun time and the movie I would recommend most going into this weekend. This is easily the best action film of the summer with very little competition keeping it from being the best of the year.<\/p>\n
